Data Lab

A home for proprietary testing data

The internal hub that backs Android Authority's reviews, comparison articles, and related video coverage. Brings together third-party benchmarks, proprietary battery and charging tests, and real game performance metrics, with tooling built to turn complex data into charts that drop straight into articles and videos.

Overview

What it does

Proprietary testing data

Stores the results of our internal testing — battery and charging protocols, thermal behaviour, real game frame rates — alongside third-party benchmarks and survey data. One place to ask "how does this phone actually perform?" and get a defensible answer.

Upload & processing

Data entry pipelines take raw test output, normalise it against the device database, and surface it through the comparison tool. Devices, metrics, and measurement runs are managed from the same place so nothing drifts out of sync.

Editorial-first output

Leaderboards, device-to-device comparisons, time-series tracking, and animated charts — all designed to be exported into written articles and YouTube videos with minimal extra work.

Comparison

Built for multi-media editorial content

Side-by-side devices, animated charts

The comparison tool is where the time savings show up: pick two or more devices, select the metrics, get a chart that's already styled and sized for article templates and video overlays. Convert your charts directly to JPEG, PNG, or WebP or preserve beautiful animations for video with MP4. No more pulling CSVs into Excel and arguing about axis scales.

All the data is interactive in-app, automatically producing data percentage conversions for easy talking points. Reviewers get the live version for research; readers get the rendered chart in the finished piece.

The upgraded database even supports multiple variants of the same device, allowing reviewers to retest devices after patches and updates. Helps reviewers compare how things change over time without losing the original data in a web of duplicates.

Data entry

Bringing multiple testing frameworks together

A single source of truth

The data entry side of the platform is the unglamorous bit that makes everything else work. New devices, new chipsets, new test results, and survey data all flow through a single pipeline so the comparison tool never references a phone that hasn't been properly added to the system.

It's the part that turns "we have spreadsheets everywhere" into "we have a database that the rest of the team can query."

The original database, comparison functionality and charting tools were hand-coded in Python. The current expansion — animated comparison charts, video chart output, and expanded device versioning — is built with agent-assisted development on Replit's AI platform, with the data model and editorial requirements staying human-led.
